Diplomarbeit, 2016, CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 AT Abstract The present thesis deals with the search and development of identity of contemporary individuals. This process occurs within a fast changing environment, plenty possible ways of life and a very consumption orientated culture and society. These circumstances can lead to a certain feeling of being lost to some people. How values have changed, in which way these parameters can lead to an identity crisis and how this relates to a remarkably increased tendency towards individualization will also be discussed in this work. Things play an important role in this context because they are tainted with meanings, values and emotions and when acquired they can form an essential basis of identity. This potential has been recognised and is used purposefully by contemporary marketing for the promotion of products. The virtual networking also provides support for customers and producers with advantages and disadvantages for both parties. The aim of this investigation is to find out in which kind of way these parameters are also part of retro as a trend or style. Because of commonalities retro could be a chance to design the own environment in an individual and self-determined way. By applying this strategy the individual may gain a safe, but still developable identity to lean on in doubtful times.
