Masterthesis, 2023, CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International Supervisor: Markus Dobmeier Abstract The complex networks of sensory modalities in our bodies help us extract maximum information from the environment for a comprehensive experience.The built-environment must adapt constantly with the humans interacting with it. Building an inclusive and diverse environment brings individuals of all nature closer and should be the crucial driving force behind designing.The research is initiated by exploring architecture as a medium to address the sensory requirements of Neurodivergent Individuals, that are presumed ordinary by the Neurotypical Individuals. Senses are amplified or suppressed for Autistic Individuals of the Spectrum, hence this research attempts in pressing the need for designing diverse environments allowing sensorial flexibilities and opportunities for cognitive and creative growth. Spaces built using Natural materials can provide therapeutic, enriching and healthy atmosphere for Autistic individuals, thereby providing stimulating opportunities for individual and social growth. However, to understand the perception of Autistic individuals interacting with Natural materials, a qualitative approach was conducted through a ‘Sensory Exploration Workshop’.Additionally, quantitative responses from Autistic adults, therapists, specialists and parents were also analysed for supporting this research question further. The interactive engagement through the Workshop gives a new dimension to possibilities of therapeutic activities with Natural materials than the known synthetic materials in the market.The flexible and adaptive attributes of Natural materials pave way to designing the whole space as a therapeutic medium, thereby making it possible to control the sensorial intensities. The research further dives into exploring various combinations of infusing different materials from the nature for designing a learning environment catering to individual sensory and motor requirements. It attempts to initiate a dialogue between people from different backgrounds to contribute their experience and knowledge into innovating new possibilities of place-making for Neurodivergent Individuals.
